Pau Hana Paddleboards Surf Supply is a minority-owned business founded in 2006 in Santa Clarita, CA, by Asian Pacific Islander Todd Caranto (Filipino American).Pau Hana, [pronounced: pow HAH-nah], is a Hawaiian phrase that means “Work is over.” “Pau Hana Time” encapsulates the spirit of play and good times with friends and family. To that end, Pau Hana Surf Supply is a design and manufacturing company that builds equipment for that purpose. Athlete and board designer Todd Caranto, researches, designs, builds, rides, and tests all of its stand up paddle boards, adhering to a rigorous iterative development strategy. Because after the work is done, Pau Hana time is all about the ride.

About Todd Caranto, Founder

Todd Caranto, SUP designer, is the Managing Director and founder of Pau Hana Surf Supply. At Pau Hana, he is the design authority and oversees all projects undertaken by the product development, marketing, sales, operations, and athletic teams.

He is also an avid paddle surfer and competitive athlete participating in stand up paddle board competitions of every kind, becoming very involved with downriver SUP in white water SUP crosses, SUP slalom, and adventure river racing — designing river specific boards for SUP pioneers such as Nick Troutman, Shane Perrin, and many others.

Todd cut his teeth in the surf industry distributing blanks to shapers after the Clark Foam shutdown in December 2005. Not satisfied with supplying materials alone and driven by his compulsion to innovate, he found himself drawn to the board design and development process and applied his creative and technical skills to shaping. Starting in his garage with a planer and a blank, he learned to shape surfboards the old fashioned way, by shredding blank after blank until he learned to get the curves smooth. After mangling and repairing a graveyard of boards, he learned to work with composites for lamination. Todd spent the next winter inside a beat up shipping container, hidden away in an old boatyard in the Port of Long Beach, laminating epoxy boards and learning the craft from the local boat builders and surfboard glassers. That experience grounded him in the fundamentals of epoxy board construction and has proved invaluable in his designs.

As a new paddler in 2007, Todd was frustrated with the early SUP designs. The boards were either too unstable to ride or they were unmaneuverable. Todd soon set about designing his own boards that would be stable, easy to ride, and maneuverable. Those designs have evolved into Pau Hana’s full line of SUPs and are the direct result of understanding the rider, the water conditions, the materials, and the expectations of customers — based on their feedback and Todd’s personal experience and participation in the water.

Todd’s SUP designs have been featured in Athleta, Men’s Journal, and Outside Magazine. His 2012 race board won Outside Magazine’s coveted “Gear of the Year” award, the first time such an award has been given for Stand Up Paddle Boards.

He lives in Santa Monica, CA with his wife and their three children. When not working, he can be found paddle-surfing, snowboarding, rock climbing, and building in the workshop.
